Gobble!  Gobble!  It’s the time during the school year when my preschoolers are starting to really recognize their names.  Each morning when they come into the classroom, they hang their name up and sign in.  Now that they are recognizing their names, it’s time to begin practicing spelling and recognizing the letters in their names.  This cute turkey feather name recognition activity & craft can double as a busy bag that will help with letter and name recognition practice and strengthen fine motor skills!

Turkey Feather Name Recognition

Creating this busy bag takes no time at all and you probably have the supplies on hand!
  • brown paper plate (or paint one brown!)
  • circle stickers – found in the office supplies aisle
  • googly eyes
  • construction paper
  • clothespins
  • Sharpie marker
Paint the paper plate brown.  I used a cake size paper plate.  Glue the turkey face on the paper plate.  Add circle stickers with the letters in your child’s name to the plate near the top.  Spread the stickers out so that there is enough room for the clothespins to fit easily.

I wrote the letters on the circle stickers and on the end of the clothespins.  The goal is to match the letters on the clothespins with the correct letter on the turkey.
At first, preschoolers will just match the letters, maybe without knowing the names of the letters.  When matching the letters becomes easier, show your child how to begin with the first letter in her name and build the letters from left to right.

Exposing young children to letters in fun ways, like this turkey feather busy bag, helps encourage learning without pressure or frustration!
You can also change up the turkey feathers to fit the skills that your child is working on.  Match shapes, numbers, or even upper and lower case letters with this busy bag!
